From Falmer to Kingston…and back

29th May

May Bank Holiday and a chance to catch up with Hannah. We arrive in Brighton early and raise Hannah from her bed with the promise of lunch. Our walk is a 4 mile stroll across the South Downs from Falmer to Kingston, lunch at The Juggs in Kingston and home with a slight variation on our outward-bound route (map). The sun is out and as we climb out of Falmer onto the Downs it feels as if summer is here at last. We join a slow crocodile of walkers, all on the London 2 Brighton Challenge, some looking in pretty poor shape. For a moment I’m worried that they’re all headed for lunch at The Juggs but it turns out their finish is Brighton Racecourse and energy drinks rather than lunch appear to be a priority.

I really enjoy walking on the South Downs and so, it appears, do others. The paths are busy with walkers, runners and mountain bikers but the views and the company are good. The steep climb out of Kingston on the way back reminds both of us that time passes, particularly when Hannah effortlessly skips up. Back in Falmer by mid-afternoon, sun burned but with time for a cup of tea before the evening service at CCK in Brighton. All in all, a great way to spend Bank Holiday Sunday!
